MoVi Selections!

*Two films currently running at Galleria Cinemas at the Mall at Marathon (New Providence) and Mall Drive (Grand Bahama)* Any day of the week is a good day to see a movie. Whether you choose to hit the theatres for some of that buttery popcorn that you just can’t seem to get anywhere else, or snuggle under warm blankets at home in the comfort of your living room or bed, here are two movie recommendations from The MoVi Group based on ratings from Rotten Tomatoes (the TripAdvisor of movie sites). 1) Ready Player One Synopsis: It’s the year 2045 and people immerse themselves in a limitless virtual world known as the OASIS. When the OASIS creator dies, he promises his fortune to the player that can find his Easter Egg. Wade Watts finds the first clue and embarks on a treasure hunt with his friends to save the OASIS and their world. Rotten Tomatoes’ Critics Consensus: “Ready Player One is a sweetly nostalgic thrill ride that neatly encapsulates [Stephen] Spielberg's strengths while adding another solidly engrossing adventure to his filmography.” 2) Pacific Rim Uprising Synopsis: After his father sacrificed his life to lead humanity to victory over the “Kaiju,” Jake Pentecost has since gotten swept up in the criminal underworld. A new threat arises and Jake joins his estranged sister Mako Mori as she leads a new generation of pilots in the fight against extinction at the hands of the Kaiju. Rotten Tomatoes’ Critics Consensus: “Pacific Rim Uprising won't win any points for subtlety or originality, but it delivers enough of the rock 'em-sock 'em robots-vs.-kaiju thrills that fans of the original will be looking for.”

Getting to Know Us - MoVi’s Staff Member of the Week: Nicolette Johnson! Production Associate

This Profile for Nicolette (Nicky) Johnson has the honour of being our first of many, showcasing the talented and super-duper people who make up the heart and soul of The MoVi Group. Passionate and dauntless in her quest for excellence with a thirst for knowledge and career advancement, Nicky Johnson is likely to go far in her chosen field. She has been working in media for almost ten years, starting as a production junior with local TV and radio station JCN. The camerawoman now has a variety of production assignments under her belt and continues to expand her skills with The MoVi Group, where she’s worked for the last four years. “My favourite part about what I do is getting to create the look and feel of what a client wants – bringing their ideas and thoughts to reality.” Aside from her job, Nicky enjoys spending time with friends and family and is a sports enthusiast. “It doesn’t matter if it’s football, basketball, or any other game – I love sports. The Lakers are my favorite but I keep up with all the teams and their stats. Recently, I’ve become hooked on watching televised golf games as a result of filming the golf tournament in Exuma.” The tournament she refers to is the Great Exuma Classic, where Nicky made history by becoming the first female camera operator to “close on the 18th hole,” or film the final shot (read more about it here)! Nicky was part of the MoVi team hired by NBC to film the event for their television networks overseas. Her passion extends beyond sports and production. Nicky has a heart of gold and is kind and caring of her fellow man. She finds herself naturally mentoring and encouraging young people like herself, helping them find confidence and showing them how to take those first steps toward achieving their hopes and dreams. “Whatever knowledge I have, I try to share it among people who may not have the same opportunities I do. I always say it’s not the way you start, but how you finish. Once you put your best foot forward, someone will see you, and doors will begin to open. “I would like to see more opportunities for women in this field, and I’d like to help create those opportunities. I love my church and help out in their production department and with church events when I can. I like to help people and motivate them by letting them know how far I’ve come and that they can be successful too. “I work hard because I want to leave a legacy; if I was gone tomorrow, what would people say? I always try to put my best into whatever I do. As much as it’s about pleasing the client, it’s also about that moment you get to see your work out there and go, ‘Muddasick – that good, eh?!’”

MoVi Aids ABC Network in Ex-Governor Chris Christie Interview

Former New Jersey Governor, Chris Christie had his Bahamas vacation interrupted recently when ABC News contacted Burton Wallace of the MoVi Group to record a live interview with the Republican at Atlantis for a global networked Sunday morning TV show. Chris Christie, known for his ‘no holds barred’ approach when asked his opinion, now works for ABC TV as a political pundit. He is an acknowledged friend, advisor and supporter of Donald Trump. MoVi facilitated the live stream feed of the Chris Christie interview by TV show host, Fareed Zakaria on the firing of Andrew McCabe, the former FBI deputy director and a frequent negative target of Donald Trump Tweets; show host Zakaria had requested a Trump supporter to speak to the merit of the firing and the former Republican Governor fit the bill, but was on vacation at Atlantis in The Bahamas. MoVi, the leading sound, lighting and stage and film production house in The Bahamas, has worked on several occasions for ABC Network Television, so Wallace wasn’t too surprised to get a late night call for an early morning shoot the next day. “Whenever ABC or any of the other networks come to The Bahamas they call us to work with them. So I wasn’t too surprised when I got a call late booking us for a 6:00 a.m. live stream shoot over at Atlantis,” said the MoVi founder and Leads/Operations Manager. “We have the production talent, equipment and experience they need – it saves them time and money using Bahamians instead of importing their own equipment and people. Having assets here – the right equipment and experienced trained personnel - makes The Bahamas a very convenient shoot location for overseas TV News outlets, and visiting event and destination management companies,” said Mr. Wallace. Who You Gonna Call? Bahamian talent saved the day for ABC Television when they needed to conduct an urgent interview in Nassau. They called MoVi who facilitated the live stream feed to ABC Television in New York from Atlantis. L to R: Burton Wallace on camera with former New Jersey Governor, Chris Christie. New Alliances, New Opportunities

In an interview on securing the Group’s state-of-the-art 4K broadcast truck – the first of its kind in The Bahamas – Founder and Lead/Operations Manager Burton Wallace discusses the local demand for such a resource and the partnership that led to the acquisition. “I saw the need for our own outside broadcast truck a long time ago. We were on the perimeter of all these incoming events and witness to tons of equipment and people being imported all the time and I realized it would be such a great business opportunity if these things could already be here. Incoming event managers would say – ‘If you guys had this here we’d be calling you all the time’ – because they hate having to ship equipment for the job. They’d like to be able to come here, do their thing, and leave without all the extra hassle to worry about. “I got connected with a guy named Sergio from Brazil. We spoke about business opportunities. I did the research on his company and liked what I saw. We also got on really well, so we made the decision to do business together while working on an IDB conference in Nassau. “Meeting and working with Sergio, who owns several successful media companies, has given me a source for services that is just phenomenal. It’s greatly increased the footprint of what we can put on the table now for clients, and literally all it takes is a phone call. This business alliance has also opened the door for extensive training opportunities for Bahamians in the tech and communications field. For instance, I’m working with BTVI because I want to ensure their studies are in keeping with the tech needs of the day. I’m also thinking of MoVi Internships for UB students. We now have the capability to produce world-class communication technicians at all levels. The opportunities are many.” Leah Carr, March 5 2018

A Winning Shot: The MoVi Group’s Nicollette Johnson is First Female Camera Operator to Close on the 18th Hole!

Being the first female to “close on the 18th hole” was an accomplishment Nicolette Johnson hadn’t even dreamed of when she assisted filming the Great Exuma Classic Golf Tournament in Exuma as part of The MoVi Group production team, in conjunction with NBC, earlier this year. “I won’t say it was by chance, because I think your steps are ordered. But the NBC team was short camera persons. The camera guys that were supposed to come in from Freeport arrived late. We were already live and couldn’t just stop what we were doing, so they asked me to go on the 18th hole and everything just sort of fell into place. “I had no idea what I’d done. It was pretty stormy that weekend, so I went on the 18th hole – in the rain – and closed on the 18th hole. When we were done shooting, they were like, ‘Way to go, Nikki! You’re the first female to close on the 18th hole!’” The 18th hole, Nikki clarifies, is the final hole in golf. Shooting on the 18th hole means she shot that closing shot, and was the first female camera operator ever to do it! “It was so interesting because that day a 19-year-old won. So it was a great day of special accomplishments all around, and despite being in the rain – all soaked and wet – I loved it. I got a better sense of the sport, because watching it on TV can be boring but to be there in the moment is pretty great. “I love sports to begin with, especially the production side of it. It’s a pretty great feeling to accomplish this, and I’m looking for more opportunities to show my talents and gifts with The MoVi Group in the future.” By Leah Carr February 21, 2018
